Matt Hoyme

Originally from the mountains of North Carolina, Matt Hoyme grew up in a large, sometimes chaotic family that served as the creative bedrock for his artistic journey. The energy, humor, and sense of connection from those early years continue to inform and inspire his work today.

Now based on the island of Kaua‘i since 2014, Hoyme’s art merges imagination, memory, and observation into a body of work that celebrates the complexity of human experience. Drawing inspiration from nature, interpersonal relationships, diversity, and counterculture, his paintings explore how we relate—to the world around us and to each other.

Fascinated by the natural world and the human condition, Hoyme infuses his art with both drama and wit, balancing emotional depth with a touch of playfulness. Each piece begins as a dream or vision—a fleeting feeling or image—which he translates onto canvas with a vivid sense of storytelling and intuition.

Through his creativity, love, and humor, Hoyme’s artistic mission is to bring joy and wonderment into the world. His work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions, including the MACC Biennial 2025 at the Schaefer International Gallery on Maui, the Artists of Hawai‘i 2024, and the Kaua‘i Society of Artists Exhibitions (2024 and 2025), where he received both the Art Patron Award and the Ellen Tubman “Rising Star” Award.
